When and how to use Natural Progesterone Cream
Since all posts menopausal women, and many younger women, are progesterone deficient, a larger amount is needed at first to bring the progesterone/estrogen levels into balance. With this in mind, it is recommended that to start, a 2oz. Jar or pump be used up in 3 weeks. This rate should be continued until all symptoms of estrogen dominance are gone. This generally takes about 3 months. Then try cutting back on the amount. If symptoms return, gradually increase amount until they go away. Each woman is different so some will require more progesterone cream than others to help alleviate her symptoms. The best application sites are the soft skin areas of the body such as face, hands, chest, abdomen, inner arms and thighs, and in cases of osteoporosis to the entire trabecular spine.
Continue using for several months to a year depending on the severity of your symptoms. Then discontinue altogether for a while to see if symptoms are under permanent control. If symptoms are not under permanent control then resume application as stated previously adjusting amount to your individual needs as your symptoms get under control again.
If you are still menstruating, use ½ teaspoon of cream twice a day after ovulation (which is generally 12-14 days from the first day of menstrual flow) through day 26. You do not need natural progesterone while menstruating; however, if you experience menstrual cramps try rubbing cream on the lower abdomen. If you have premenstrual migraines, try using progesterone during the ten days before your period. Be alert to the aura that usually precedes these headaches. If one occurs, you can apply ¼ to ½ teaspoon on your forehead or back of neck every three to four hours until your symptoms subside. This commonly requires only one or two extra applications.
If you have premenopausal symptoms and are still menstruating, you can use progesterone approximately two weeks per month. Since normal progesterone production can reach 20 milligrams per day between days 15 to 26 of the cycle (day one being the onset of bleeding), it is recommended that you begin using the cream between day 12 and day 26 to approximate normal levels. Some women whose cycles are naturally longer will use it from day 10 to day 28.
Some doctors will prescribe estrogen for premenopausal women with irregular bleeding. However, there is no reason to give estrogen of any sort to a woman who is still having menstrual bleeding. The fact of menstrual bleeding means there is no estrogen deficiency. Menstrual periods may be due to progesterone deficiency. If you have been put on estrogen for irregular bleeding, taper down the estrogen and start using progesterone cream as described above.
If bleeding starts before day 26 (or before it would normally begin), stop the progesterone and start counting up to day 12 again, and then start the progesterone again. It may take three cycles before you achieve synchrony with your normal cycle.
If you have menopausal symptoms and are not menstruating, have osteoporosis or for prevention of osteoporosis, use based on the calendar month. Start using ½ teaspoon twice a day for three weeks then go off for one week. It is important to stop using the cream for at least five to seven days each month so that your body does not get immune to it. If that happens, you'll find you need more and more cream to get the same results.
Menopausal women taking estrogen supplement, should reduce their dosage to one-half when starting the progesterone. Since progesterone replacement in women deficient in progesterone may initially (and temporarily) increase the sensitivity of estrogen receptors, it's important to reduce the dosage by one-half immediately. If you do not, you are likely to experience symptoms of estrogen dominance during the first one to two months of progesterone use.
An abrupt reduction in estrogen can trigger resumption of hot flashes or vaginal dryness. These symptoms can be prevented by gradual lowering of the dose. Reduce the dose by one-half when starting the progesterone cream. Then every two to three months you can try lowering the dose by half again. Have a goal of getting off estrogen altogether. Since postmenopausal women continue to make estrogen )primarily in their body fat), many women find that estrogen supplement can be eliminate altogether five to six months after starting the use of progesterone.
There may be some women who will need to temporarily or permanently be on a low dosage of estrogen. You can use estrogen and progesterone together during a three-week or 24 to 25 day time period each month. Leave five to seven days each month without either hormone. The estrogen dose should be low enough that monthly bleeding does not occur but high enough to prevent vaginal dryness or hot flashes.
Menopausal women taking an estrogen and progestin combination should stop the progestin immediately when natural progesterone cream is added. For example, if you are taking Premarin and Provera, the most common combination, you should stop taking Provera. There have been no known ill effects in stopping Provera abruptly. As previously mentioned, estrogen should be tapered slowly.
Many women experience "hot flashes" following premenopausal hysterectomy, oophorectomy (complete removal of ovaries), and in the beginning of the natural onset of menopause. Natural Progesterone cream is reported to be effective for relieving symptoms of hot flashes. The recommended application is ½ to ¾ of a teaspoon four times in the hour following a flush, and continued at the same quantity and frequency for each occurrence. He flushing episode frequency decreases until flushing ceases altogether. Most women have reported a complete cessation of flushing within three to eight weeks. The time span is difficult to predict because of biochemical individuality. By continued application of the cream once or twice daily, the flushing will be controlled and the skin will remain soft and supple.
The cream will help prevent wrinkling and brown spots. Many women say the cream is one of the best moisturizers. One beauty counselor advises rubbing a small amount on the palm of the hands until warm. Then apply using gentle strokes, and applying more cream carefully around the eyes. If your skin is very dry, wet your fingers with tepid water and gently massage the skin to increase moisture and penetration of the cream.
Can the use of natural progesterone cause side effects or cancer? Does it interfere with other medicines? Quoting from the research and development literature published by Dr. Dalton and others; synthetic progestin and natural progesterone can trigger uterine bleeding similar to menstrual flow. However, since natural progesterone has been in use, there have been only a few reported cases of incidental spotting for one or two periods after starting with natural progesterone. After the third to fifth period, the cycle was regulated and spotting did not recur.
No human cancer has ever been reported as a result of natural progesterone treatment. In fact, there are reports in the scientific literature indicating that natural progesterone has been used to treat specific uterine cancers!
There have been no reports of natural progesterone interfering with prescription or over the counter medicines.
